Dani Carvajal was the hero as he fired Real Madrid to a 3-2 victory in the UEFA Super Cup over 10-man Sevilla with a brilliant extra-time winner.
The full-back struck with a penalty shootout looming, running from near halfway before drilling the ball past Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico with the outside of his right foot to earn Madrid a dramatic 3-2 win in Trondheim, Norway.
Madrid were trailing 2-1 deep into stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes when skipper Sergio Ramos headed them level, and Carvajal made the most of their escape. Carvajal’s late goal then meant Sevilla were beaten in the Super Cup for the third year in a row.
It was night for history but more importantly for Zidane who has now become just the fifth coach to win the UEFA Super Cup having also lifted the trophy as a player. Others were Ancelotti, Simeone, Josep Guardiola, and Luis Enrique.
